Malta International Airport (MLA)
Airport Information
(Luqa, Malta)

Located next to the village of Luqa and on the south-eastern side of the island, Malta International Airport (MLA) is also nearby Gudja, Kirkop, Safi and Valleta. Malta Airport was fully refurbished in the early 1990s, giving the facility a much-needed facelift and improving its efficiency.

This busy facility provides an important gateway to Malta for international tourists, and also for Maltese residents heading from international destinations. A large proportion of the annual passenger flow, which numbers almost three million, is handled by the local airline Air Malta, which currently serves no less than 67 destinations.

Ground transportation options are somewhat restricted and travellers will find that the Gozo Airport Shuttle Bus service is amongst the most popular, connecting Mgarr and the harbour terminal at Cirkewwa. Regular and efficient public bus services are also available at Malta Airport and run to a variety of destinations. Taxis are also available for journeys to locations across the island, such as Birzebbuga, Marsaxlokk, Rabat and Valletta.

Malta International Airport (MLA) Information: History and Facilities
The very first aircraft began flying over Malta during the early part of the 1920s and soon after, an airfield was built within the Ta'Qali area, along with further airfields at both Luqa and Hal Far. After World War II, Luqa Airport was the only airfield that remained in good shape and so was developed further into a prominent civilian air hub.

Finally in 1958, after much planning and building work, Malta Airport was finally inaugurated and passenger's numbers steadily increased, particularly when the jet plane era arrived. By the late 1970s, significant improvements were necessary and the airport extended its runway and began renovating its terminal, adding lounge areas and a number of important facilities. However, in 1992, a new, larger and more modern terminal had replaced the building, and just ten years later, Malta International Airport (MLA) was privatised, with shares sold to the general public.

As you would expect, the airport's facilities don't compare with those of the world's biggest airports. However, they are still more than ample and travellers will not be disappointed by either the essential services on offer, or the options available for dining and shopping. The main shops are clustered around the Welcomers' Hall and check-in desks, offering everything from jewellery and perfume, to books and music.

Those looking for refreshments at Malta Airport will find a number of sound choices, such as the Jet Express Food Court and Hard Rock Café on the first level of departures, and the Connections Cafeteria on the ground floor of the Welcomers' Hall. There are no business facilities available at the airport, although the nearby Golden Tulip Vivaldi Hotel can provide appropriate services for business passengers.

Malta International Airport (MLA) Information: About Luqa / Malta Tourism
Malta is a popular visitor destination, rich in history, culture and natural charm. Amongst its attractions is the historic 16th-century walled city of Valleta. Here you'll find some magnificent classic architecture in the shape of cathedrals and palaces, with the Auberge de Castille offering an especially good example of the latter. The island is well geared to receive visitors and it has a solid tourist infrastructure.

Meanwhile, the ancient city of Mdina is a charming place dating back some 3,000 years and close to Malta Airport (MLA) itself. Attractions here include the 11th-century Roman Catholic Sicula-Norman Cathedral and the Norman-style Palazzo Falzon.
